Literally translated to Beef Bowl this Japanese dish is rice topped with beef and onion simmered in a sweet sauce consisting of soy sauce and mirin. There are a few chains that stretch across Japan that are jockeying for poll position in the gyudon race: Yoshinoya, Sukiya and Matsuya.
They are constantly adding new twist to the plain beef bowl with hopes of attracting the man on the fence. I personally love Matsuya’s sauces, but Sukiya’s great customer service has won me over as a lifelong client.
US Beef was banned in Japan on Feb 11, 2004 because of the Mad Cow Disease
Yoshinoya sold a pork bowl or butadon as a substitute. Sukiya served Ausie Beef and also added butadon. Japanese has lifted the ban on US Beef and has resumed imports.
