Saying Cheers in Japan

Having spent some time in Japan I’ve learned that there are lots of do’s and don’ts. One in particular that I learned from my jiu jitsu teacher is – when you are having a drink with a person who you want to show respect to you should always make sure that when you campai or cheers with that person, the rim of your cup is lower than theirs when your glasses meet.

I have paid close attention to this rule when meeting and drinking with old Japanese men. They always seem to appreciate my courtesy.

Also, be careful not to start drinking your beer before you campai with everyone.

That’s a definite no-no and you will or sure mark yourself as a completely selfish individual.
