You will find so many odd and fun looking but very useful kitchen toys in Japan. Just go to one of your local 100yen shops and you will see a variety of these neat little gadgets. One of the items you will definitely find in every kitchen drawer in Japan is the DAIKON SURI 大根すり (radish grater).
Yes you can use it as a cheese grater and foreigners often make that mistake, but this tool is meant to grate DAIKON (Japanese radish) for a dipping sauce for grilled fish and NABE (Japanese Hot Pot) and many other Japanese dishes.
You will often see the word OROSHI おろし(oroshi) in a Japanese recipe. Instead of chopping garlic or ginger into real small pieces, using this DAIKON SURI大根すり (radish grater) will grate the garlic and ginger instead.
