Tokyo Kogyaru

kogal
Who are these girls that have blond streaked hair, overly tanned skin, tons of make up, short skirts, platform shoes and brand name bags? They’re a subculture of girls that became popular in the late 90’s and are still a phenomenon to this day. You will never forget them once you see them with your own eyes. They are called Kogal.

Kogal can also be seen in school uniforms, altered to their own style…very short skirts. They also sport those thick white knee high slouch socks to complete their whole look.

The majority of them hang out in the streets of Shibuya. They are often in pairs or in a group. Most of them have no jobs which is called a Freeta and spend their wealthy parents money on Louis Vuitton bags.

Having such a busy social life, these Kogal created their own language called Kogal-go. I’ve yet to hear this language but I have seen it in text messages on cell phones.
