This is the first post in the new “Technology” series on Tune-In-Tokyo which will discuss the latest and greatest gadgets from Japan. The main focus of this series will be video and DSLR cameras… but once in a while some other items will pop in here.
Depth-of-field adapters (DOF adapters) have been used in recent years with small-chip professional cameras to achieve a film look. If you’re not familiar with Depth-of-field adapters then take a look at this tutorial: 35mm Adapters Explained.
Philip Bloom, a London based DP and Director, posted a very interesting article on his blog about DSLR cameras and their ability to record high definition video. While this might seem like no big deal to the average consumer, professional video guys understand very well what DSLR cameras offer that small-chip video cameras are lacking – depth-of-field.
With the arrival of cameras like the Canon EOS 5D Mark II and the Panasonic Lumix GH1, both capable of HD video capture, many videographers including Philip Bloom himslef, are wondering if this is the end of the DOF adapter. According to Philip the DSLRs still have a long way to go. But technology is flying and it won’t be long before the video and still worlds totally converge.

Really interesting! I didn’t know about these adapters. They look a little big for my usage though…
DOF adapters aren’t for run-and-gun style shooting. If you have time to set up the shot then the adapters are great. If you have to be quick on your feet then you can forget about it.
